Deputy Chief Risk Officer

About the role

Based in Bermuda, and reporting directly to the Group Chief Risk Officer, the successful candidate will play a leading role in the embedding of high quality enterprise risk management, increasing stakeholder value and policyholder protection. Monument Re is a dynamic and growing reinsurer and prominent consolidator of life insurance portfolios.
 

Responsibilities

  • Propose value-add solutions to enhance stakeholder value and policyholder protection;
  • Provide constructive challenge and advice to the business to improve the identification, measurement, management, monitoring and reporting of risk;
  • Support the embedding of a sound risk culture across the organisation;
  • Provide risk management oversight of key strategic projects;
  • Contribute to the production of risk reviews, addressing the Company’s key  risks, including in relation to deals and investment initiatives;
  • Lead the production of the Group Solvency Self Assessment and provide oversight of liquidity risk management;
  • Support the Group CRO to oversee the local CRO functions, ensuring that active risk management is delivered in each region that meets Group and local risk requirements;
  • Prepare and deliver management, Board and regulatory presentations and reports;
  • Carry out duties with integrity and diligence, ensuring that professional standards are maintained at all times.

Role Requirements

  • University degree at 2:1 level or above (or equivalent) in a mathematical subject;
  • Professional qualification in investment or risk management e.g. CFA, FIA or equivalent;
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in quantitative financial services roles;
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in long-term life insurance;
  • Deep practical experience of asset-liability management, liquidity risk management, hedging, reinsurance, and Bermudian and Solvency II regulatory regimes;
  • Proven ability to think independently and to present challenge in a constructive, practical and solutions-oriented manner;
  • Powerful communicator at Board level, ability to formulate and convey key messages with clarity, both verbally and in written form, with firm grasp of the technical detail;
  • Proven stakeholder management, organizational and time management skills;
  • Excellent business acumen and risk awareness;
  • Energy and enthusiasm, resilience and independence, a positive attitude and a high degree of integrity.
  • Experience in the assessment of operational risks is preferred but not essential;
  • Practical experience of asset classes including private credit, commercial property and infrastructure is preferred but not essential.
